It’s so much fun making little things for my granddaughters!
.
I made each of my granddaughters a soft doll, with a mini quilt and a little pillow.
.
.
I have to tell you, I kept smiling while I was making these!
.
I still smile when I see the little doll’s face!
And her hair!
.
.
The pantaloons were easy, quick, and fun!

I wanted the doll quilt to look like an 1800s quilt.
I used scraps from two different fabric lines – Buggy Barn/Henry Glass and Bon Voyage by French General/Moda Fabrics.
The borders I chose from my fabric stash.
The doll quilt measures about 12 inches long. Perfect size for the doll 🙂
.
I made a “mattress” for the basket bottom, and a little pillow to go with the quilt.
.
.
.
For the doll’s hair, I used strips of scrap fabric cut with pinking shears, strips of lace, ribbon, twine, muslin, whatever I could find …
I wanted them to stay secure, so instead of gluing them, I sewed them on.
I wasn’t sure how each granddaughter would react (they’re still very young and haven’t really been playing with dolls yet).
One of them was here, visiting us for Christmas, and the other granddaughter was on FaceTime. Modern times. I’m so thankful we can talk everyday and see them and our kids!!!
I handed the gift bag to the granddaughter here and when she pulled the basket out with the doll, she looked at it, took everything out, put it back in the basket, and walked around the living room doing the same thing over and over. It was so funny! She didn’t want to open any other gifts, she just wanted to keep playing with her little doll. Then she came up to me and gave me a big kiss! It’s as if she was saying, “I know how much time and love you put into this for me! Thank you! I love you!”
Well, that certainly made it all worth it! Sewing all the tiny half-inch squares, hand stitching the dress, bow, button, hair… it was worth it!! 🙂

Have a blessed week-after-Christmas-before-New-Years!

This is the sweetest, cutest homemade doll and bed set I’ve ever seen! What lucky granddaughters!
What a kind thing to say! Thank you! And thanks for stopping by!
I showed my mother-in-law who fell in love with the doll quilt!
Aww! I’m so glad!!
They’re so lovely, thank you for sharing the photos, no wonder your granddaughter loves them! My grandmother who made me dolls’ clothes sadly died too young in an accident when I was little, but when I see the dresses now it reminds me how much she cared about us all.
Yes…I have some things my mother made me and every time I see them, I’m instantly reminded how much she cared for me.
This looks just like something my mother-in-law would have made for my daughter when she was little! Mom G was always making fun little quilty things and little stuffed animals. Your post brings back happy memories. 🙂
Aww…that’s wonderful! It is much more fun to make something when you know it’s for someone special! That’s probably how your Mom G felt. 🙂
Cute, cute, and triple cute! How fun and thoughtful to not only make the doll and her clothes, but her bedding, too! Terrific gift for the granddaughters!
I enjoy sewing and quilting…but even more when it’s something fun like this! Thanks, Laura! 🙂
So so adorable! Gosh . . .that face and hair? Just wonderful! Blessings to you and yours and all the sweet things you make by hand!
Thanks, Debbie! Blessings to you as well! 😊
What a LOT of love (and skill!) went into these! The girls will love these forever!
I sure hope so! They were so much fun to make, I’m already planning for the next one to sew! 😊
This is just adorable and you have my total awe for being able to work with dolls and doll clothes. I just love the whole ensemble.
Thanks, Lillian! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and now I want to make more! 😊
Such a fun sweet gift for your loved ones. Now I want to make one or two!
They’re pretty fun to make! I hope you give it a try! 🙂
The doll is adorable – and I absolutely love the little quilt. I can see why your granddaughter enjoyed it so much.
Working with such small pieces, and knowing the little person who’s going to be enjoying it – makes it all worth the time and effort. 🙂
OK, Daisy this is the best!! I can imagine the hours and hours you spent making all those little stitches. I can’t imagine stitching on al those strands of hair! And that little face– it’s the sweetest. It’a a treasure they have for years… (and we face timed with 2 grand-kids too. They were most impressed looking at our Christmas tree ornaments). We’re sitting here watching the Rose Parade– kids all gone. So quiet around here! New Years hugs friend!!
So good to hear from you, Rhonda! Yes, it did take a while to make the doll & quilt, but I have to tell you, it was so fun. There’s a trick to the hair — I made small groups of different strands (lace, fabric, ribbon, twine) and then made a knot in the middle, folded them in half and then sewed them to the hairline. So it went pretty fast after that. Stuffing those tiny arms and legs – that was the hardest part! haha The mini quilt was fun, but I must confess, sewing those tiny squares took a lot longer than I thought. I’m pretty sure I could’ve sewn a queen-size quilt top in the same amount of time!! Totally worth it, though, when I saw my oldest granddaughter open it and play with it! She really loved it. It’s quiet here, too, now…everyone’s gone back home and I miss them, but there’s FaceTime…and that’s more than my parents had when I was away all those years! I don’t know how they did it! Remember those days when all we had was long distance phone calls?!! Hugs to you, and a very happy New Year!
Good tip about the hair Daisy!! My sister is a true seamstress (made my wedding dress)– I want to show it to her! And- I do remember pre- FaceTime days! When we lived in Spain we wrote letters (no email yet) and once a month my parents would call, but it was $3 a minute so they set a timer! Thanks again for the doll post– Did you have a pattern? Had you done that before? hugs hugs!
What a darling doll & quilt. I have one granddaughter who is 14 months old. I’d love to make one of these for her.
PS This is my first visit to your blog. Very nice.
Cutest dolls ever! I would love to make one – would love it even more if I had someone to make it for! How fortunate your family is.
