This quilt was so fun to design and make!

AF43A6B7-CA36-4B89-A339-C7E6E95D84DE_1_201_a

I love looking at antique quilts…

and I love to play around with designs on my little graph paper notebook.

F0723C0B-3438-48E8-BEBB-371190C727D3

I saw a beautiful quilt from the late 1800s with this star pattern done in just blue and white.  I really want to make it that way some time this year, but for now, I wanted to make it in red/white/blue colors.
I used beautiful fabric from Minick & Simpson that I had been keeping for a while.

A7AAD99F-7829-4921-98D1-DFC5AF3D1AC7

The half-square triangles were squared to 3″ before sewing together.  That part was not fun but it really, really helps to make lining up the corners easier, and it looks so much better!  I used to skip this part but I learned the hard way that squaring up  those HSTs really makes a big difference.

I love how it turned out.

Now I just have to get it ready for hand quilting.  Not sure which patterns to use for hand quilting…  Any suggestions?

Happy quilting,

Daisy

A time to sew

I’ve been working on finishing up a stack of WIP’s I’ve had for a while…

.

It’s been fun to work on this quilt that I pieced together sometime last year…

.

I used Bonnie & Camille fabrics that I had saved.  They’re so pretty and colorful!

This is a very easy pattern, and it comes together quickly!

I’m so glad I chose a different background than the white I always use.  It’s much more colorful and fun.  Instead, I made the stars white, and the background a pretty shade of turquoise.  I also love the patchwork look in the squares.

I finished to quilt top and now comes the hand quilting and then the binding.
If you have any suggestions for the hand quilting pattern, let me know.

It was such a quick and fun pattern to follow that I might just make one to keep.  This one will probably be a gift.

Have a blessed Sunday!

One of the things I get to do is sew for my grand kids and it’s so much fun!   Choosing fabrics I think they’ll like, and outfits that will not only be practical, but also fun for them to wear – that’s also part of the fun.

.

.

I hadn’t sewn with knit fabric for a long time.  My serger was not working properly and I didn’t want to even try doing it with my regular sewing machine.

But it started getting colder and I found some great deals on knits, so I decided to give it a try (on my regular machine), and see if I could get some of these fabrics sewn into outfits that the kids would enjoy.

This cute fabric was perfect for this pattern, and sewing it together was easy and quick.

I used the zigzag stitch on all the seams.

It was such a quick and easy project that I decided to make another using a pretty, soft flowery fabric.

I added lace to the hem of the top for a touch of softness and because I knew my granddaughter would love it!

If you haven’t tried sewing with knit before, or if you haven’t done so in a long time, give it a try!  I think you’ll be surprised at how easy and quick it is to work with!

Happy sewing!

Guess what guys?!!  I have my first class on Skillshare!

Learn to Sew In 3 Easy Seams!

.

Why Skillshare?  Well, I love to teach, and I love to sew… Skillshare offered an easy way for me to do both at the same time, so it was an offer I couldn’t refuse!  If you love crafts of all kinds – quilting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, cooking, baking, watercolor, painting, drawing, graphic design, anything you can think of… there’s a class for it on Skillshare!  I’ve been taking classes just for fun when I’m sitting for hours at airports, or traveling in the car for half a day.  It’s relaxing for me to do something fun like that.  So, I thought I could give teaching a class a try, and see how it goes.

I also like how every class on Skillshare is set up with short videos that are usually 2-5 minutes long, so if you don’t have a lot of time, you can just watch a segment or two at a time.  Also, entire classes are short, so that anyone can take them.  My class is less than 30 minutes long all together.
.

I hope you’ll give it a try!  If you’d like to find out how you can take this class or watch another video in my class, just click here:

Skillshare Class

.

Oh yes, I almost forgot!  I’m also doing a giveaway as part of the class –
Three winners will each receive two yards of fabric!!
.

It was fun to work on this class, and I can’t wait to do the next one!

Stay tuned!

Happy Sewing,

Daisy

I’ve been working, on & off, on these little blocks…

.

I didn’t want to use just plain white for the background, which is what I’ve done so many times…

I wanted something more fun and out of the usual for me…

.

.

I love this shade of blue… makes me smile as I sew…

.

.

I used the template for mini periwinkle and the papers for wacky web pattern, both from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

.

.

I used the Arbor Blossom charm pack. So much fun to work with these bright and cheery fabrics!

.

.

I’m still not sure what I’m going to make with these blocks…

.

.

What do you think? Quilt? Placemats?

.

I thought of maybe making a picnic table quilt?

Should I use the red thread or the blue thread for the hand-quilting??

.

I’ll appreciate your input!

.

Have a blessed weekend!

I GOT A NEW COMPUTER!!!!!!

If you have been following me for a while, you know that I spilled tea all over my brand new computer two years ago, and have since been without one…

But my husband surprised me yesterday with a new computer for my birthday!  And it’s not just any little old computer… he got me a beautiful, desk top Mac.
I know!!!  I couldn’t believe it!  I STILL can’t believe it!
It’s so much fun to work with!

I don’t know how I’ll be able to get anything done around the house in the next several days & weeks!  haha

I’ll finally be able to keep up with the blogging world (including my own little blog), and I’m excited about publishing the Skillshare class I’ve been working on, as well as other things I’ve been looking forward to for a while but had to put on hold until I had a computer.

Anyways… I know this is not an exciting post with a new project or recipe… but I was so excited I just had to share.

Have a wonderful week!

I love to sew for my grandkids.  I don’t have a lot of time, but I do a little every chance I get, especially early in the mornings or later at night.   It’s so much fun for me, that it’s actually a de-stresser 😊

.

I made this little grey dress for one of my granddaughters.

I used pattern Simplicity #5704, but I always end up making several changes; It’s more fun and makes it more personal as well.

I got the fabric with the tiny flowers at Joann’s, the trim and the button at Hobby Lobby, and the solid grey fabric for the lining at WalMart.

It’s not that I went shopping at three different places just for this one dress… these are places I regularly go to looking for sales, so these things were ones that I had set apart for “someday” (which is usually what I do) 😁

.

060C419E-8B4D-48A6-9FB7-B9D4CB7659F1

.

For the trim on the yoke front, I just used the same trim as the hem, but I placed them side-by-side, making it look like a wider trim, more in keeping with the size of the yoke.

A pretty button and some ribbon add a finishing touch to the top of the dress.

.

C584071A-EF0D-4509-BB15-18F3426D8BE0

.

I try to make the back of the dress as pretty as the front, so I decided to add some trim and I sewed on some tulle for a soft bow that ties after the dress is zipped up.

.

.

I really enjoy sewing, but especially when I’m sewing for my grandkids.  I smile almost the entire time.  I hope they enjoy wearing the little clothes, or playing with the little sewn toys, as much as I enjoy making it for them. 😊❤️

.

.

Happy sewing!

I’ve been away a lot lately and I’ve also had computer problems, so those two things have kept me from updating my blog.  I’m hoping to fix the computer problem this week (but I’ve thought that before and nothing happened!) 😁

I’ve been posting a lot on Instagram because it’s so easy to do from my phone and I can send it from anywhere.  So I’m going to try to post as often as I do on my IG account.

I am working on this Ocean Waves Quilt, which is one of those Christmas gifts that I’m working on throughout the year.  I’m wondering what kind of border to put on it… I’ve got a few options I’m thinking about,  but I really want to finish it by the end of next week and then begin the hand-quilting.

So, if you have any suggestions or ideas, I’d really appreciate it! 😊

Happy weekend!

This year I am hoping to finish a few UFOs that I have in my sewing room…

And this one is at the top of the list…

.

CFC52B19-D5CA-4209-9CCD-93F0CB2C4A3C

B95A92D7-EB09-48C1-9D3A-BCE024148F54.

I started it about two years ago (I know!) but other projects became more “urgent” and I had to put it away for a while.

It’ll be a Christmas gift later this year, but I’m trying to work on gifts throughout the year, so that I won’t be stressing later, wishing I had started earlier… (anybody know what I’m talking about??)

.

I started out by gathering different blues & greens, 100% cotton, and cutting them into 5” strips, then 5” squares…  (NOTE:  This is Waverly fabric that I buy at Walmart.  It’s beautiful, 100% cotton, and great for quilting!  Also, it’s a lot more affordable!)

B47CC690-E046-4DBE-A068-9BF7715ACFBE

. (They have all those strings on the edges because I cut them two years ago and they’ve been sitting in a plastic bag, waiting for me to pay attention to them!)

.

Then I sewed them into half-square triangles using a white cotton, and ironed them with seams to the darker side.

I make half-square triangles by placing two 5” squares, right sides together, and sewing all the way around the square (with a quarter-inch seam).  Then I iron it, and cut across in an X (corner to corner).  You’ll have four half-square triangles.

Don’t they look pretty, all neatly grouped together?… I love ocean colors… sigh…

EAD3B9AE-34E0-4C29-938C-63FCEDF183CF

.

Then it was time to trim those little “ears”… It really helps when you’re sewing them together!

See how nice they look once they’ve been trimmed?

.

Once all the half-square triangles have been sewn and ears trimmed, then it’s time to lay out the square, paying close attention to the pattern — It’s easy to get confused, but after you’ve done it about 20 times, it gets easier. . .

B89591ED-20A2-43EE-8CD8-F9C92EE03733.

I love all the blues & greens…

Colors from the sea.

(Have I already said that?)

.

EB2C2BDD-FBDC-46AA-ADAB-B7AE62967AEA.

It’s a simple pattern, great for a beginner, because it looks very complicated but it’s actually just half-square triangles making up one block that is used over & over again.

.

27EC54EC-3525-4484-90DD-036C9514A858

.

Once you have four of the same squares, you put them together (again, paying close attention to the pattern), and sew them so that they make up one big square.

For the quilt I’m making, I need 16 of these “big” squares.  It’ll be perfect for a Queen-size bed, but OK also for a King, if it has another sheet or blanket layered beneath it.

.

I chose these colors because the family I want to give it to, they love ocean colors, too!  (Who doesn’t?!)

.

960D52CF-8E24-4D08-AD26-0183E7A76901

.

Half-square triangles are so versatile for quilt patterns… the possibilities are endless!

.

This is what it looks like when 4 squares have been sewn together to make up the “big” square.  You can tell that it’s the same square, just turned a little differently each time.  (It took me a while to realize this!)

I tape one onto my wall so that I can look at it while I sew and keep those squares in the right place.

CFC52B19-D5CA-4209-9CCD-93F0CB2C4A3C

.

I’m hoping to finish the quilt top this week and then begin the hand-quilting.

Anybody have any suggestions on the hand-quilting?  I’d love any ideas!  I may just do straight lines across the squares, but I’m thinking that something circular, to mimic waves, might be fun.  Let me know what you think.  I’d appreciate any ideas you may have! 😊

Happy sewing & quilting,

Daisy
